Water consumption per capita

In Switzerland, the average daily per capita consumption of water is slightly higher than the EU average and is approx. 140-170 liters of direct consumption per day (EU average approx. 124-144 l). This is roughly broken down as follows:

  • direct use includes drinking water and household (shower, flush, toilet, washing machine) - usually between around 140 and 170 liters per day. Of this, around 120 liters are used for toilets, showers, etc., so there is great potential for savings there
  • the so-called water footprint or virtual water of around 4,200 liters results from total consumption, including hidden water for the production of food and consumer goods in Switzerland and abroad.

Saving water and energy consumption

Did you know?

After heating, hot water consumption is the second biggest energy guzzler in Swiss households. By reducing water and energy consumption, considerable cost savings can be achieved by lowering utility bills.

Also good for the environment

Saving hot water not only reduces water consumption, but also CO2 emissions.

Another tip

Use your rainwater for watering the garden and save even more drinking water.

Tips & tricks for saving water

  • Showering instead of bathing: Showering uses significantly less water and energy than a full bath.
  • Turn off the shower while lathering up: Switch off the shower briefly while you soap up.
  • Air clothes instead of washing them: Some items of clothing can be worn again after airing, saving energy for washing.
  • Washing machine fully loaded: Only start the washing machine when it is full.
  • Use rainwater: Use rainwater to water your plants.
  • Wash the vegetables in a bowl: Wash fruit and vegetables in a bowl instead of under running water.
