What is the advance recycling fee (ARF)?

The advance recycling fee (ARF) is a proven financing system in Switzerland that ensures electrical devices are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner and valuable raw materials can be recovered.

How the ARF works

When you buy a new device - for example, a refrigerator, computer, printer, or smartphone - the ARF is already included in the purchase price. It is collected by the retailer and passed directly to the responsible recycling organization. For you as a consumer, this means no additional costs when returning your old device.

Free and professional recycling by certified collection points and specialized companies.

Why does the ARF exist?

Electronic devices contain valuable raw materials such as copper, aluminum, or rare metals - but also environmentally harmful substances that pose a danger if disposed of improperly.

Thanks to the ARF, it is ensured that:

  • Resources are conserved and reused
  • Pollutants do not enter the environment
  • A nationwide network of collection points can be operated

Official collection points

In addition to retailers, there is a dense network of official collection points throughout Switzerland. There you can easily drop off your old devices. These collection points work with recycling organizations and guarantee professional recycling. An overview of all collection points can be found here

Which devices are included

You can hand in almost all electrical and electronic devices, including:
  • Household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, or microwaves
  • Consumer electronics such as televisions, radios, or loudspeakers
  • Computers, printers, smartphones, and accessories
  • Tools, lights, and much more
  • solar panels
