What is bidirectional charging – and why is it worth looking to the future today?
What is bidirectional charging?
Bidirectional charging
means that electricity can flow
in both directions
between an electric vehicle (EV) and the power grid. This means that the vehicle can not only draw energy from the grid, but also
feed surplus energy back
into it when needed – for example, into your own home or, in the future, into the public power grid. This technology is becoming increasingly important in the wake of the energy transition and will be officially permitted by law from 2026.
There are already three main applications today:
•
Vehicle-to-Home (V2H)
: The electric car supplies your own home with electricity. This application is already permitted, for example for optimising self-consumption in conjunction with photovoltaics.
•
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)
: The electric vehicle feeds energy into the public grid –
legally permitted from 2026 onwards by the Mantelerlass (Mantel Decree)
.
• Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) : The vehicle supplies external electrical devices directly with electricity, e.g. when camping.
These applications contribute to grid stabilisation, enable more efficient use of renewable energies and offer users financial advantages by feeding electricity into the grid at peak times. It is therefore already worthwhile to opt for a wallbox that supports bidirectional charging when purchasing a new vehicle.
Don't forget the technical registration: TAG required by the electrician
If you want to use bidirectional charging , you must submit a so-called technical connection request (TAG) to the grid operator. This can only be done by a certified electrician. The type of charging station must be reported – at least according to the current status.
Important: Anyone who wants to use vehicle-to-grid from 2026 onwards must submit a new TAG , even if a V2H-compatible installation is already in place. The grid operator must check whether the local grid is stable enough or needs to be upgraded. This registration is also relevant for guarantees of origin (HKN) , as the electricity fed into the grid must be correctly allocated. The specific legal framework is still being worked on – in future, it may only be necessary to specify the power of the wallbox.
Primeo Energie: Pioneering work in bidirectional charging
Primeo Energie is actively involved in the development and implementation of bidirectional charging solutions. In collaboration with car-sharing provider Mobility, a pilot system with a bidirectional charging station has been installed in Bulle, Switzerland. This system makes it possible to feed electricity from the batteries of electric vehicles into the property's grid in order to cap peak loads (peak shaving).
The system is connected to the Mobility reservation system so that the control system always knows when vehicles are on site. In future, weather data will be analysed to make forecasts about the expected solar power production. This project demonstrates the potential of bidirectional charging in practice and underlines Primeo Energie's role as an innovation leader.

This wallbox is ideal for households that want to increase their energy efficiency and actively contribute to the energy transition.
Conclusion – Invest wisely today and reap the benefits in the future
Bidirectional charging
will become an integral part of modern energy concepts from 2026 onwards – with the option of feeding electricity into the public grid (V2G). But anyone who installs a suitable wallbox now and submits the technical connection request (TAG) via an electrician is optimally prepared.
Vehicle-to-home is already permitted today
and enables intelligent optimisation of self-consumption – for example, in combination with a PV system.
Projects such as the pilot plant from Primeo Energie in cooperation with Mobility show how bidirectional charging works in practice – and how e-mobility can actively contribute to grid stabilisation and better use of solar power. The
Zaptec Go 2 Wallbox
, available in the Primeo Energie online shop, is a concrete example of a smart, bidirectional charging solution.
